First Dance Wedding Songs: Tips for Choosing the Best Song

by | March 29, 2020

For some couples, the first dance is one of the most special moments during the wedding day. With countless options, it can be difficult to choose just one song for that moment! Here are some tips to navigate around choosing the best song for you and your partner.

No Right or Wrong

The most important thing to think of when selecting a song is that there is truly no right or wrong decision. When considering genre, style or tempo, it ultimately comes down to what song makes your heart happy! Consider your love story and why is is so special or what makes it unique to you.

If nothing initially comes to mind, select your favorite genres or styles of music and once chosen, further select down to any favorable artist and/or lyrics. Examining the lyrics can be important as they will tell a story of topics and/or life events and the lyrics should be cohesive with all those feel-good emotions. Look for lyrics that speak to you and your partner, whether it brings on an emotion or maybe words that speak to your relationship.

Tempo & Length

It should only matter to you! Think about your personality. You may be the couple that wants to gently sway back and forth or possibly already on your third lesson learning a choreographed dance! Truth is, having a choreographed dance does not mean it has to be an uptempo song. In the same regard, step touching back and forth for a few minutes doesn’t mean you can’t add a little spin and dip if that is your style! The main tip when it comes to tempo is just knowing the song and going over whatever you plan to do a few times. At the end of the day, don’t overthink it - it should be fun not stressful and feel like you.

Find The Flow

When choosing a wedding song, it is likely that some of the other details of your day-of have been solidified. This includes venue, time of year, flowers, colors, your dress, etc. If you are have some difficulty finding the perfect song, consider how the day looks as a whole to guide you to a tune that feels like the overall vibe of the wedding. Country may be a good choice if your wedding is more of a rustic feel. Alternative/indie music can compliment venues that are more intimate or in a bohemian space.

If nothing else is coming to mind, throwbacks are always classic and have a magic way of fitting into any theme or venue type. Motown tunes or songs by Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley can compliment any couple and any space!
